VLC Media Player

VLC media player is an open source, free software media player and multimedia framework written by the VideoLAN project.

VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats. VLC used to stand for VideoLAN Client, but that meaning is now deprecated.

It is one of the most platform-independent players available, with versions for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, BeOS, Syllable, BSD, MorphOS, Solaris and Sharp Zaurus, and is widely used with over 300 million downloads as of November 2009.

The default distribution of VLC includes a large number of free decoding and encoding libraries; on the Windows platform, this greatly reduces the need for finding/calibrating proprietary plugins. Many of VLC's codecs are provided by the libavcodec library from the FFmpeg project, but it uses mainly its own muxer and demuxers. It also gained distinction as the first player to support playback of encrypted DVDs on Linux by using the libdvdcss DVD decryption library.

ooVoo Messenger

ooVoo is an instant messaging, videoconfrencing and VOIP program that is an alternative and a competator to Skype. It is different to Skype, in that it does not use P2P technology. Instead it uses propiritary technology that is exclusive to ooVoo. It's main focus is on the videoconfrencing part. As it can have up to 6 people in a real-time conversation. ooVoo can also allow people to contact themselves with screennames through voice, chat, and video.

ooVoo also allows you to record the video and audio conversations, allow you to leave a message to people that aren't there and also send files to people. ooVoo also has an outbounding dialing service which has much more quality then Skype and is cheaper then SkypeOut. People can also start a conversation also with up to 6 telephone numbers, which can make for some really good bridging between shows.
